The Project
British Car Auctions (BCA) constructed new buildings at their Manchester Belle Vue site to house new car auction facilities, new trading halls, admin blocks, valeting facilities, restaurants and external viewing areas and car parking. Robert Whetham Associates (RWA) was commissioned by BCA to work alongside GHP Architects to carry out the design and provision of the full M&E services.

Our Solution
Whilst no significant hurdles were encountered during the work, we were, nevertheless, under some pressure to ensure that the work was completed on time and within budget. To ensure this was achieved, we reviewed a range of different wiring systems and introduced modular, “plug and play”, lighting connection and control solutions in some key areas to speed up installation times. Wherever appropriate and cost-effective, we introduced a range of renewable and sustainable technologies, including • photovoltaics to meet local authority energy targets • natural ventilation • LED lighting c/w absence detection • LED external lighting of the service yard areas
Solution Benefits
The project was finished on time and within budget. British Car Auctions (BCA) received energy efficient buildings at two of its major sites, which met all the latest Part L Building Regulations relating to fuel and power conservation and benefitted from low energy/green technology. The photovoltaics (PV) provided “free” electricity from the sun which was offset against the electricity consumption of the building and provided a reduction in CO2.
