The Oldham Hulme Grammar group of schools offers outstanding levels of education to children of all ages, from kindergarten through junior and secondary schools up to sixth form level.
To create a sensitive restoration and extension of the school buildings which would provide modern teaching spaces but still retain the beautiful features of the original building.
The first phase of the kindergarten project involved the refurbishment of Thornycroft House, a Grade II listed building to provide a new home for reception to year 2 children. The second phase saw the construction of a new nursery building.
Working closely with Oldham Hulme Grammar’s estates manager, Richard Gaskell, RWA had to develop a modern and efficient mechanical and electrical services specification which met all current regulations but was also designed around the original features of the building.
The project continued RWA’s long standing relationship with Oldham chartered architects, Thorpe, Whyman and Briggs, which has helped it land education sector contracts worth over £4 million in the past 18 months.
“RWA ably demonstrated its design and engineering skills on phase one of this development last year and has once again delivered an installation that is both contemporary in design and sympathetic to the historic character of the building.”

“RWA understands the education sector very well and consistently delivers a very high standard of work in an all round package of mechanical, electrical and lighting design. As well as the various school projects it has recently completed for us in and around Greater Manchester, we have another half dozen specifications in the pipeline on which we’ll also look to partner RWA.”
